Here Comes the Boom: Review (Family Friendly Entertainment!)

I was given the chance to see a screening of Here Comes the Boom with Kevin James. If you aren’t familiar with which movie I’m talking about, here’s the trailer. (My review is below it)

Here come the Boom: I think the previews make it seem like a funny fight movie. That it is, but it’s also very heartwarming. With a good message, no bad language, and very little blood (considering it’s a movie about fighting!), it’s something I would take my kids to go see.
If you like Kevin James at all – you will like this movie. Henry Winkler was awesome and I left feeling uplifted and happy.

The main story is about saving another teacher’s job (budget cuts mean the music department has to be cut). Kevin James decides to help raise the money and tries teaching night school for people working to get their citizenship. That job isn’t paying out as quickly as needed, so one night he’s trying to help a student and together they catch a fight on TV. Once Kevin learns about how much it pays, he’s in to lose! He finds out that he has to work his way up in the fight world and has a lot of fights and training to prepare him for the big money match-up in Vegas.

Side stories include overcoming teacher apathy, students learning how to care again, learning to follow your dreams no matter what, and I’m sure more that I can’t remember. My kids are 6 and 8 and I think they’d like this movie. The fighting isn’t gory and the little blood that is seen is never in a gross way. More of a bloody lip here, a cut near the eye there. Yes, during the last fight he was beat-up pretty good and had a swollen eye which was not wonderful, but even looking like that it was no worse than what I recall Mike Tyson’s Punch Out guy looking like. Well, except this guy was real.

I’d say 10 and up, but my kids have seen some PG-13 (Avengers to name one) and I would see no problem with them seeing this. There’s one kiss, but it’s not anything bad (again thinking about kids, but my son would say, EW and turn his head anyway).
