OK so I went to see a sneak peek of the Five Year Engagement movie this week. It’s the first movie I ever saw by myself. Mostly because I didn’t find out about it until about 2 hours before the screening, but the bonus was easier to find one seat at the last minute anyway.
So, I went in not knowing much about it. The title seems to imply romantic-comedy, but the poster implies tragedy. Well, it was kind of each of them.
Now if you’re familiar with Judd Apatow at all you know he makes crude movies. I can thankfully say that this was not as bad as many I’ve seen from him. There were some parts that would make you uncomfortable watching if you were on a first date or with your parents, don’t get me wrong. This is not a movie for kids at all. At all.
Now for your adults out there who can handle seeing more then you’d be ok. It’s not as bad with the “in your face” stuff as say, Bridesmaids so if you handled that you can handle this. I just hate to be at a movie unaware.
The plot is like this (without spoiling things) – Violet and Tom get engaged. She takes a job in another state and they move. He doesn’t adjust well and they drift apart. The engagement just keeps going because things keep happening and stuff gets in the way. Will they make it to the alter? You’ll have to watch to see.
It had a lot of funny parts in it, thankfully they were not all in the preview. I love it when celebs I recognize and like show up, and a few did in this. I spent most of the time thinking Violet’s sister was familiar but couldn’t place her. She’s Annie from community, dang. At the credits I recognized her name. She was not Annie in this movie, it was awesome!
I loved Tom’s adventures learning to hunt, working at the sandwich shop, and his best friend is hilarious too.
All in all I’d say a solid B, but just because I’m a prude and really wish they’d leave some things to the imagination.
