Happy Birthday to my baby girl! (Thanks for the cupcake)

I can’t believe that Cheech is 6. I wanted to share a few photos from last night. Also I wanted to say thanks to you guys for voting for her and thanks to Mommy Shorts and Crumbs bakery for making her birthday that much “sweeter” (sorry for that little pun). She was bragging to everyone that she was getting a big cupcake from New York. I’m glad it arrived in time and she had her brother, best friend, mommy, daddy, and her neighbor friends over to help her eat it.

I asked her to let me do a new smash photo for you but she wasn’t really excited about it. So I dabbed a tiny bit on her nose and she laughed. Funny how 5 years makes the difference there.

I’m pretty sure my husband wants another one soon. He was going on and on about how moist the cupcake was and I was laughing at him (at first), and then I was like woah back there a bit you know that I also make cakes sometimes. The great compliment they received was that nothing I ever made was as good as the Crumbs one. So I guess the insult to me is a compliment to them.

Chee wanted to make a video to say thanks, but then she wanted to make another. Sorry but they were both cute (to me anyway) so I posted both. I maybe should have made 2 different ones to click and watch two. Looking back maybe it’s weird to have edited them together. Oh well.

I told you she was obsessed with Monster High. I just had candles and stuff I was going to put on top, but her MH cupcakes looked cute against the big cupcake and she decided that 3 of her dolls had to be around it too. It worked out ok.

We’re going forward with the Monster High and Kirby idea – check out these awesome cupcake picks!

While I loved a suggestion I got about a volcano and an exploding water cake – I think my kids are dead set on Monster High and Kirby.

So I wandered over to ebay (such a far walk, ya know?) and found exactly what the doctor ordered. Cupcake picks!!! This is great because when it comes to making cupcakes for the class I won’t have to draw something special on each cupcake. That’s a great day for me when I don’t spend 4+ hours decorating 20 cupcakes.

Monster High Picks

I ordered them from Gretchen’s Shop on ebay. I found the cutest Monster High stuff and about 1 Kirby thing. (Seriously Nintendo – you guys are missing out on a huge market. Last year I had to do Mario and this year Kirby. Take note, start offering party supplies! Even on ebay!) What’s a mom to do when you find thousands of designs for one kid and nothing for the other?

I emailed Gretchen’s Shop and asked if they could do Kirby picks too. She asked which characters and I told her how I’d like them to not look too babyish or girly. She came through on both accounts. My order was for the Monster High picks, but I had a note in there to do 3 sets of Monster High and 3 sets of Kirby.

Kirby Picks

It took a few days to get the custom part ready, but I was blown away by what I received. Check it out – these are the cupcake picks! The kids are super jazzed about these and don’t want their friends to keep them or throw them away. I showed them that they can toss the stick and keep the top part. I’m sure my house will be overrun with these soon.

Gretchen made Kirby look like he’s in an action game and not some weird cloud-like floaty guy. My husband laughed and agreed that’s as manly as Kirby could look. Gretchen even included Spectra – another request as Chee loves the purple MH doll. Each set has a pick that says “Happy 6th / 8th birthday” to them and another has their name on it. Seriously, I just was wanting to give her shop a shout-out.

There’s no disclaimer, I bought and paid for these, but I wanted to show them off as I know finding Kirby stuff is crazy difficult and I was proud on how she came through for me! Birthdays are saved this year!!

I’ll post photos when I get things done, gotta’ do Chee’s tonight as tomorrow’s her birthday. My baby’s 6 years old tomorrow. Wow.

Birthday ideas needed!

OK, so I know last year I had asked for birthday cake ideas and I’m asking again — give me some ideas please for cakes!!

Chee 5th bday cake

Before I get started on this, I realize I didn’t follow through on the photos of last year’s cakes. Let me get those for you – last year I made Chee a Rapunzel cake. She turned 5 and was just in LOVE with Tangled the movie. She still is and now her room is done in it. I took her name off of it in paintshop.

For and the boy I made a Mario one. I got toys from the internet, the small plastic ones and then decorated around them. At the party the kids were like, “I want to eat the Mario!” and I was like “Well, you can’t – he’s plastic…sorry I am not THAT talented.” I also took his name off of this.

Boy's 7th bday cake

I love pinterest, but my kids cake requests this year are kind of lacking on pins!

My daughter wants Monster High.
My son wants Kirby.

Let’s be frank here for a second, my son is a gamer. I can’t act like it’s a phase anymore, he wanted Mario for last year’s cake and this year it’s Kirby. He has told me that he doesn’t love football or sports, but he likes science and computers. Um, he comes by the science love honest but I hope he’s not going to get made fun of for his pink bubble looking thing on his cake. Pink?

Stupid Nintendo, why do you do this to me? He’s almost 8 and well, I don’t know about you but I haven’t found any Nintendo themed cake gear! Last year I had to get toys for the cake and this year??? LOL good luck. Kirby’s about as elusive as a leprechaun. I wish I had a lucky leprechaun to help me find Kirby stuff.

Monster High, that’s a tiny bit easier, but mostly because it’s uber popular today. I am 1,000% sure I’m not going to make this cake. Mostly because I’m sure it would take forever. Plus, it has no characters on it. She is in love with Frankie and I swear the character of Draculara was based on her urge to talk a million miles a minutes – so I am not sure what to do yet.

I have found a few cupcake picks that are Monster High characters so she may wind up with those. But that would be for taking to school for lunch on her actual birthday. I still have a family party to throw. I do them together and so I usually have one night of insane cake making a year. It’s a blessing and a curse. I get to do them both and knock them out and not think about it until next year…but then again it’s a LOT of time spent that one week thinking about cakes. And you know making them.

I will leave you with a few more that I’ve done for their birthday in the past. Oh and if you want to see more check the cakes category. I made pins out of them, well the ones I already had. I will do these soon. :)

Thomas the Train (front and back view…it took me FOREVER – this was his 3rd birthday cake) Everything on this was edible, except the candles.

My favorite of hers so far – she still loves Ariel. I’ve debated making something Monster High-ish out of this mold. Draculara’s sweet 1600 is Feb 14th, so just a few days before Chee’s sweet 6. We shall see!

Thanks for looking and seriously, ideas????

How my son stopped sucking his thumb and pushy dentists.

crossbite

There’s a local dentist who has a bad reputation for pushing stuff that may not be needed. Sadly I didn’t know this and took my kids to see him when they were small. They wanted my son to wear this apparatus when he was 4. —>

It was something to fix his crossbite. He had only baby teeth and he was a thumb sucker. I’d asked about what age to work to break him and they had told me that it’d work itself out.

crossbite fixerThey were like it’s going to cost this much and insurance will pay this much. Let’s schedule it for next week, when would you like the appointment??? I about cried. I was like, that’s a lot of money and pretty scary looking. I am going to have to talk to my husband and they were like ok, we’ll leave the room so you can call him.

What??? I took the photos of it with my camera in my purse. My 4 and 2 year olds are in the room whining and I told them that I’d just have to call back later as I’m not sure what my schedule was like. I was freaked out!

Then I went to my dentist and asked his opinion. Like walked into the waiting room and just asked to see him. He looked at him briefly and was like No! No no no no NO!!! Don’t do that to that poor baby! Work to get the thumb habit to stop, but crossbites will either get better with time as their mouth grows (and when he quits the thumb) or when he gets older he can get braces, but why on EARTH would anyone want a 4 year old to wear that?

I stayed with Dr. Snodgrass two more years and just said no to them. The next year they gave the kids flouride and my insurance didn’t cover it but once a year. I told them that I’d pay it this time but put it in the records that I don’t want that to happen again. Next year, another flouride bill. Why? Because they didn’t care what my records said, they do it each time as it’s best for the kid. Um, no. I called and went off. Look I asked you not to do it. I’m the mom. I will not be paying you for these and I’d like their records. I’ll be by next week to pick them up we’re done.

the boy

Now they go to my dentist with me. There’s no arcade, but they ASK before any treatment and they do it when I’m doing mine. I trust him and they have a tiny goodie box for the kids so they still get their silly ring or whatever after.

Oh and that dental thing scared my 4 y/o out of his mind. He was crying about it and begging not to. He was like, I’ll quit the thumb – anything but that. He asked us to help him bandage it at night  and sure enough he quit pretty quick. I’d be like remember that mouth thing and show him the photo. BAM. So if anything I recommend them to scare your kid to stop the thumb.

now

By the way – my son is almost 8 now, so this was a while ago, but still so fresh in my mind. And he has a few adult teeth and …. well see for yourself, he isn’t lacking for room right now. Crossbite or not, the david letterman gap was going to happen either way. I had one and I had braces and fixed it Oh the braces. Better start saving up now!

I hate having crabs

Wait, that sounded way worse than I intended. Let me rephrase that one, I hate having hermit crabs as pets. Whew, that sounds better.
Let me paint a picture for you. It was August and school was about to start back, so like many other families we realized we hadn’t gone on a vacation and went to planning in a haphazard fashion. Wait? Most people plan ahead? Really?
I digress.

So we planned to go to Florida and about 2 weeks later we were down there.

It was great and I love looking at our photos so it must have been a good trip, but we brought home some unexpected pets – hermit crabs. Now I know who goes to Florida thinking, “I gots to get me some hermit crabs!”?? But we were at the gift shops and they had them in there. The kids went wild with happiness about begged for a new pet. I buckled pretty quickly as I recall having them as a kid and liking them. Hubby wasn’t as quick to say yes, but he eventually said ok and we bought 2 crabs The first night we realized one never would come out of his shell, so we went back and got 2 more – you know in case that one was sickly or something.

This was a good call as both of Cheech’s crabs died in October. We had a crab funeral for them and since it was October we had tombstone decorations and the kids had to use those too. They drew pictures, cried a little, and we buried them.

Yes, Cheech has her Disney ears on at their funeral, clearly she was in mourning. Or she’s 5.

Anyway, that’s the way it went with both of her crabs, but the boy’s crabs live on. Oh do they live on. When we bought them I thought, I don’t want to just kill them slowly over time, let’s see how you’re supposed to care for them. This was a bad idea, as getting them some sand, spraying them daily with salt water, feeding them special food, keeping their humidity higher, letting them drink fresh distilled water – those are all the proper ways to care for a crab. I read all about it and followed it to a T.

Sadly, the kids love for their crabs waned.

I would randomly ask, “Did you feed and water your crabs?” and the kids would be all “No, we forgot!” Everytime. I thought, surely the cold weather outside and the chilly bonus room will cause us to have a winter burial and that’s ok. But it didn’t. Sometime over Christmas break hubby noticed that the crab tank had mold in it. Yikes! Mold? As if Cheech didn’t get sick easy enough!!

Early January Cheech got pneumonia and that was the final straw, so I took matters into my own hands. I got rid of the tank and returned the crabs to their original homes in their carriers. My hubby tried to make me feel bad, “You know you’re killing them right?” “I never wanted them to start with” Well, my answer was to call Sarah McLachlan or something and maybe they’d make a TV commercial about it. I know I’m the best wife ever, right? But now each kid has their original crabitat and can now transport their crabs around. They were so happy to have their pets portable again!

The bad thing is, they still forget to feed and water them. Also, they have to clean out the crabitats whereas before we just kind of left their tank alone.

I have decided that when these die we will not be bringing anymore home with us. If they want them they can get them day #1 of a vacation and at the end of the week we’ll set them free on the beach. This may be a win/win as they can play all week with them and we can set some captive animals free who were going to likely slowly die somewhere land-locked in a crabitat away from home. The only crabs we’re having at our house from here on out are the Xia-Xia Hermit Crabs. Clearly some toy maker at one point in time had this same dilemma (see pink crab above in photo). Please don’t call Sarah McLachlan on me, but if you do tell her she has to take these to her house.

Do your kids get sick every time they go to Chuck E Cheese or a Bouncy Place?

Cheech was a pretty sickly baby. She has acid reflux (GERD) and it presents with asthmatic qualities. I have always said she has asthma, but the doctors always correct me and say that she’s never been diagnosed, because she doesn’t have what they call normal asthma. When she gets sick she always gets it in her chest. Seriously, she can have an ear infection and it will almost always lead to Bronchitis or Pneumonia. Well, I kept thinking she’d outgrow it. I kept hearing she’d outgrow it. But well, here we are one week after a trip to a bouncy house place for her best friend’s birthday and has a 102.5 fever this morning. We’re about the head to the doctor (appointment is made and we’re dressed), but it got me wondering – do regular kids get sick everytime they go to one of these “fun” places?

We go to Chuck E Cheese each year for her birthday. I hate that place. Not the actual place, it’s quite fun, but I hate the germs. I know that her birthday visit will result in pneumonia or something similar in about a week. It doesn’t matter how much antibacterial stuff I put on the table, the games before she plays them, etc. You know what does happen? I’ll turn my head for one second and her mouth will be on some awful disease ridden surface. That small merry-go-round was last year’s target. Seriously, she was riding it and thought why not put my mouth on the large pole. Ugh. Then like clockwork it was her birthday party weekend and I had to postpone it because of the pneumonia.

Her party was at the bouncy place last year. I don’t recall if she got sick or if she was on enough meds to prevent it, but one quick look at some receipts and I’m sure I could figure it out.

I let her go to the bounce party with her best friend because she’s a kid. I know I can’t keep her from her life. I just want to know when this will end! When will she be able to go to one of these places and not get sick about a week later. Any ideas? Thoughts? She’s 1 month away from being 6 and I swear I thought we’d be past this already. While I’m very thankful she’s not been on steriods as much the last year and a half as she had been up until that point, I’m just so over this and I know she is too.
